Manono Island

Manono is an island of Samoa, which lies between the two main islands of Upolu and Savaii Samoa of the state.

Geography

Manono is 2.4 km long and up to 1.5 km wide. The entire island is surrounded by a coral reef. The only 2.9 km ² island is located about 3 km from the western tip of Upolu away and is separated by a shallow waterway from her. Manono is very flat and has only a slight elevation in the midst of ( the crater of an extinct volcano ), it is therefore also called Flat Iceland.

700 m northwest of Manono is a small uninhabited island Nuulupa, 37 m high and with a diameter of about 100 m.

Administratively, the island belongs to the Aiga -i -le- Tai district.

Population

The island had 889 inhabitants (2006 census ). The most important villages ( inhabitants) of Manono are Apai (111) Faleu ( 354) Lepuiai (223) and Salua (201). There are no roads on the island, only a footpath connects the villages with each other.

The inhabitants cultivate taro, yams, bananas and coconuts. Of minor importance is tourism.

A legend says that an old woman was attacked and killed by dogs, since no dogs are allowed on the island.

The island, with its two neighboring islands Apolima and Nuulopa a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
