Mansa is the provincial capital of Luapula in Zambia. It is located some 1,150 meters above sea level and has 42 280 inhabitants ( 2004). It is the seat of the administration of the district of the same with 179 749 inhabitants ( 2000 census ).

Transport links

A paved road leads from Lusaka Serenje by Mansa (840 km). A shorter connection with the Zambian capital through the Copperbelt and the territory of the Democratic Republic of Congo ( DRC) and has a length of 600 km. The road in the DR Congo is paved consistently since about 2008, the border river Luapula on the northern border crossing is since around 2009 to cross a bridge. Economy

About 10 km north of Mansa a manganese ore deposit was exploited in the construction up to the 1980s. In 2007, around Mansa found more manganese ore deposits whose exploitation has partially started in 2009. The ore is processed partly locally and partly used in a local factory for the production of batteries.

Educational institutions

In addition to several primary schools exist in the city, the Mansa Teachers Training College ( MTTC ) and St. Clement's Secondary School.

Environment

The landscape around the town is hilly ( typical Dambo landscape ). Near the city is hard to see the forest inventory because it is largely used as firewood or turned into charcoal. At a greater distance there are the typical miombo sclerophyllous forest.

Attractions

The sights are farther away, but Mansa is the starting point on how to achieve dar. The Bangweulusee with huge adjoining wetlands in Samfya (about 80 km to the east ) is a bird paradise and offers boat tours for visitors. Approximately 45 km north of Mansa ( direction Mwense ) the place is Musonda Falls, where there is a hydroelectric power station on a tributary of the Luapula. At sufficiently high water level ( approximately December to July ) is fed from there electricity to the national grid.

Language

Local language is Cibemba, which is mainly spoken by the local people by the people of Aushi / Ushi.
