Manuel Bento

Manuel Bento Galrinho ( born June 25, 1948 in Golegã, † 1 March 2007 in Barreiro ) was a Portuguese football goalkeeper.

Bento played from 1972 to 19 years for the football club Benfica and was more than 10 years, between 1976 and 1986, goalkeeper of the club. He ended his active career until the age of 44 in 1991 / 92nd

Bento began his football career at the small club FC Barreirense and was brought in the season 1972/1973 Benfica in the team. At first he was only a substitute keeper for another legendary goalkeeper of the Portuguese football, José Henrique. In the years 1973 to 1976, the final two men took turns up in the 1976/77 season Manuel Bento at the age of 28 years was goalkeeper.

In the same year he made his debut in the Portuguese national team in the first qualifying match for the World Cup 1978. Though Portugal lost this game against Poland in Porto 0:2, Bento became one of the best Portuguese player personalities of the next decade and completed a total of 63 internationals.

Bento was the decisive backing of his team in reaching the semi-finals of the European Football Championship 1984. He distinguished himself by spectacular defensive actions in particular in the semifinals against France in which Portugal lost in extra time 2:3. After a surprise victory in the final qualifying match for the 1986 World Cup on German soil, he should continue to be 38 years, at a tournament in Mexico in goal. After winning the first match Manuel Bento but broke a leg in training and had to be replaced by Sporting Lisbon goalkeeper Vítor Damas.

Because of his injury continued Bento from a year and came back in 1987 as a substitute goalkeeper to Benfica. So he sat with the lost finals in the European Cup of Champions 1987/88 against PSV Eindhoven and 1990 against AC Milan in the bank. Before he finished his long career in 1992, he was not too bad to give the third keeper from the season 1990/91 for Benfica. Manuel Bento was up to his death, the oldest player who has actively played in a Portuguese Cup.

Bento died in a hospital in his hometown Barreiro near Lisbon. The cause of death, myocardial infarction was rumored.
