Manuel Casimiro

Manuel Casimiro ( born November 21, 1941 in Porto ) is a Portuguese painter, sculptor, designer and film director. He spent abroad, especially in Nice a large part of his life. Thither he had retired after being wounded during the Portuguese colonial war in Angola. He currently lives in Porto.

Life

Casimiro was born into a wealthy family. His father is the film director Manoel de Oliveira. Casimiro decided after military service and war wounded in Angola, to fully prescribe the art. After he left Portugal to mainly living abroad in Nice, he lived for many years in a "quasi- poverty." Here he made ​​friends with Vincent Descombes, Jean -François Lyotard and Michel Butor. In 1978 he lived for a year in New York City, where also held his first major exhibition community. The sale of some paintings allowed him to travel to some northern European countries. He also spent some time in Italy, especially Venice. There he met and photographed Peggy Guggenheim in her foundation, just before she died in 1979. This meeting should have a lasting influence on him.

The ovoid
