Manuel Monteiro de Castro

Cardinal Manuel Monteiro de Castro ( born March 29, 1938 in Santa Eufémia de Prazins, Guimarães, Portugal) was Vatican diplomat and is an emeritus Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

After studying Catholic theology and philosophy Manuel Monteiro de Castro received on 9 July 1961, the sacrament of Holy Orders. Monteiro de Castro was incardinated into the Archdiocese of Braga. He received his doctorate in Canon Law.

1967 Manuel Monteiro de Castro joined the diplomatic service of the Holy See. He served in the Apostolic Nunciature in Panama, Guatemala, Vietnam, Australia, Mexico and Belgium, and in the Vatican Secretariat of State.

On February 16, 1985, Pope John Paul II appointed Titular Archbishop of Beneventum, and ordered him to the Pro-Nuncio to the Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago and Belize. He received his episcopal consecration on March 23, 1985 Secretary of State Cardinal Agostino Casaroli; Co-consecrators were the Archbishop of Braga, Eurico Dias Nogueira, and the Bishop of Porto, Júlio Tavares Rebimbas. On April 25, 1987, Manuel Monteiro de Castro also pro- nuncio to Antigua and Barbuda. Pope John Paul II appointed him on 21 August 1990 Apostolic Nuncio to El Salvador and Honduras. On April 12, 1991 Monteiro de Castro resigned as Apostolic Nuncio back in Honduras. Manuel Monteiro de Castro was on 2 February 1998 Apostolic Nuncio in Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland. On March 7, 1998, he was also Apostolic Nuncio to Lesotho. Pope John Paul II appointed him on March 1, 2000 on the Apostolic Nuncio in Andorra and Spain. On 7 December 2007 he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI. In addition to the Permanent Observer to the World Tourism Organization in Madrid.

On July 3, 2009 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him. Secretary of the Congregation for Bishops. Benedict XVI. ordered him October 21, 2009 also appointed secretary of the College of Cardinals. On January 5, 2012, he was named Benedict XVI. for Penitentiary and took him to the solemn consistory of 18 February 2012 as the cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia San Domenico di Guzman in the College of Cardinals.

On September 21, 2013 Pope Francis accepted the Manuel Monteiro de Castro put forward reasons of age resignation from the office of Kardinalgroßpönitentiars.
