Manuel Pellegrini

Manuel Pellegrini ( born September 16, 1953 in Santiago de Chile ) is a Chilean former footballer and current coach.

Playing career

Just because Pellegrini graduated from school and his studies in civil engineering with top grades, allow him his parents to begin a career as a professional footballer. The trained defender Pellegrini remained in his entire playing career, his club CF Universidad de Chile faithful. In a total of 13 years ( 1973-1986 ), he played in 451 league games for his club.

Coaching career

The beginnings in Chile

Manuel Pellegrini was. Then there 1987-1989 coach after his playing career at Universidad de Chile In 1990 he went to over 16 years of club membership and joined the Chilean first division side Club Deportivo Palestino. After only one season, however, he heard again in order to sign a contract with Club Deportivo O'Higgins. Again, after only one season, he moved again to the club.

The first successes

In the two years from 1994 to 1996 he was able to win with CD Universidad Católica not only the Chilean Cup, but also the Copa Interamericana. Now he decided once to take a break, go back to 1998 Palestino. After an unsuccessful engagement, he went for the season 1999/2000 for the first time abroad. There, he handled Liga Deportiva Universitaria, with whom he reached the domestic Cup straight away.

Argentina

In San Lorenzo and River Plate he has been able to celebrate his greatest success. At River Plate Chilean went in 2002. Pellegrini went with one championship with San Lorenzo and River Plate throughout the Spanish- speaking world a name. Among other things, he reached the final of the River Plate Copa Sudamericana.

Villarreal CF

In 2004, Manuel Pellegrini surprised the sports world with his move to Spanish side Villarreal. Having previously spent his entire career as a player and coach in South America, he ventured now to move to Europe. Immediately after his commitment, he led the Spaniards a trend towards a South American players, because he knew his way around there very well. Some Argentinean players like Juan Roman Riquelme has been committed. Across Europe, he made a name for himself by reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League 2005/06. In March 2006, Pellegrini's contract with Villarreal was initially extended for one year until the end of the 2006/07 season, before the contract a second time (this time until 2010) was extended in December 2007.

Real Madrid

On 1 June 2009, it was announced that Pellegrini was engaged as head coach of Real Madrid. The Chileans, the club reached the hitherto highest score the club's history in the 2009/10 season. Yet you finished the season in second place only behind FC Barcelona. Since you also stumbled in the Copa del Rey with a third division and not it past the Champions League over the last sixteen, Pellegrini was dismissed at season's end.

FC Málaga

On 5 November 2010 Pellegrini took over after the dismissal of Jesualdo Ferreira as coach at the Spanish side Málaga CF. With the club funded at the time of Sheikh Abdullah Bin Nasser Al Thani Pellegrini finished the season 2011/12 on top of the fourth place. This was the best finish in club history, and led after successful qualification to Malaga first participation in the UEFA Champions League. Although had to be sold carrier power as Santi Cazorla, Jose Salomon Rondon and Joris Mathijsen for 2012/13 season due to financial constraints as a result of the withdrawal of the Sheik, Pellegrini reached the quarterfinals of Málaga UEFA Champions League 2012/13. This was the biggest success in club history the Andalusians. In May 2013 Pellegrini announced that he would leave the club at the end of the season. Previously, the Málaga CF was excluded by UEFA as part of the Financial Fair Play because of its debt for a year from all European cup competitions.

Manchester City

For the 2013/14 season Pellegrini took over the Erstligaelf of Manchester City. He signed a three-year contract until 30 June 2016.

Internationally

In the 1990/91 season he was next to his club activity U-21 national team coach of Chile. At the Copa America in 1991 and 1993 he was an assistant of Arturo Salah in the senior team.
