Manuel Valls

Manuel Valls ( born August 13, 1962 in Barcelona) is a French politician of Catalan descent of the Parti Socialiste (PS) and since March 31, 2014 Prime Minister of the French Republic.

Life

Manuel Valls is the son of the marriage of the Catalan painter Xavier Valls and the Ticino actress Angela Luis Galfetti. He is the nephew of the Ticino architect Aurelio Galfetti. He grew up in four languages ​​( French, Italian, Catalan, Spanish) on the left-wing intellectuals Parisian milieu.

He studied history at the Sorbonne. In 1982 he received French citizenship. In his second marriage he is married to the violinist Anne Gravoin.

Policy

At age 17, he joined in admiration of Michel Rocard, the Socialist Party (PS).

From 2001 to 2012, he was mayor of Evry in Paris and surrounding area from 2002 to 2012 Member of the Essonne départements in the National Assembly. He laid in accordance with Article 23 of the French Constitution down his seat in parliament when he was appointed member of the government. Valls had previously worked in various capacities as a consultant in the government of Lionel Jospin.

In autumn 2011, Valls was a candidate in the primaries of the Parti Socialiste for the 2012 presidential election, but resigned six percent of the votes in the first ballot of. Before the second ballot on 16 October, he spoke in favor of François Hollande. Since May 16, 2012, he was Interior Minister of France.
