Manych River

Course of Manytsch ( Маныч ) in the south of the catchment area of the Don

The Manytsch (Russian Маныч, Западный Маныч (Western Manytsch ) ) is a river in southern Russia. It flows through the eponymous swampy lowlands Manytsch, which is often regarded as the border of Europe and flows Manychskaya in the Don.

This applies only to the Western Manytsch: The shorter Eastern Manytsch, which is caused by a bifurcation of the source river Kalaus, led only after heavy rains in the Caucasus water and then flowed towards the Caspian sea without it (above ground) to achieve in the historically documented period. The inflow of Kalaus for Eastern Manytsch since the 1970s, interrupted by a dam, the water flow of the river, which is now fed only by other tributaries and canals, such as the Terek - Kuma- Manytsch channel is through a dam regulated.

Prior to the establishment of reservoirs (such Proletarsker reservoir taking natural Manytsch - Gudilo Lake and Wessjoly Reservoir ) and regulation of the Don through the 2700 km ² large Zimljansker Reservoir changed the Western Manytsch during the year several times its running direction; at high water in Don pushed water up to 100 kilometers into the West Manytsch.
