Manyikeni

Manyikeni is an archaeological site in present-day Mozambique. It is located about 52 km west of Vilanculos, which is on the coast midway between Inhambane and Beira, and was inhabited from approximately 1100 to 1600.

The approximately 200 × 200 m large place once belonged probably to Munhumutapa Empire and shows all the typical characteristics of its cities. In the center of town there is a circular stone fort, which certainly represented something of a princely residence. South of this, numerous house ruins are observed. The whole place is littered with pottery shards Fund. There were mainly inside the fortified glass beads, suggesting trade, this is supported by the discovery of marine shells ( Kaurie ). Within the fort were also found an iron gong.

1997 suggested the place to raise the status of a World Heritage Site.
