Māori Renaissance

The term Māori Renaissance refers to the remarkable development of the arts of the Māori since the 1970s. Although the Māori Renaissance focused mainly on the arts and literature, they can not be seen independently of their political and historical context.

With the economic crisis of the 70s and the global rise in oil prices New Zealand was forced to radical restructuring in the workspace. The consequences of this restructuring loaded heavily the working class of New Zealand. The Māori who had most to suffer the social consequences, took advantage of this state of affairs, to draw attention with a strong determination to their problems. It came to Prostestmärschen and land occupations.

The two Cardinal points of the Māori Renaissance were the country and the language. The Māori land called back that was taken away from them in the course of colonization and they demanded that Māori would be recognized as a second official language of New Zealand, which was realized in 1987 with the Māori Language Act.
