Map Matching

With map matching, map matching or map matching method is called, which balances the temperature measured by a locating position of an object using the location information of a digital map.

When measured with a geographic coordinate location method is directly mapped into the coordinate system of a digital map, then the true position of the object in the map of the imaged position of the object representation in the map. The reason is partly due to measurement errors in the positioning methods, on the other inaccuracies in the map. Since for many applications (for example, navigation system) the true position in the map must be known, the map matching method compares the measured position with the map information about the location and geometry of objects in the map, so that the most likely position of the object in the map is determined.

Example

In -vehicle navigation systems, the position of the vehicle is usually measured with the support of the American satellite positioning system GPS. The accuracy of the measured and the actual position is specified in GPS with 15 meters. Similarly, the digital card can have tolerances in the meter range. For the navigation device is now the position of the vehicle on the digital map must be determined so that, for example, a sensible route calculation from the current location can be determined to the destination. Without the comparison of the measured position with the map information, the vehicle could be located outside the digitized roads or on the wrong street on the map. Since the position of the vehicle is essential for the navigation device in the digital map, the measured position is compared with the map information so that the most likely location of the vehicle is determined in the map for navigation. For this purpose, the knowledge of the movements of the vehicle are exploited in map matching. Since, for example, vehicles can not move outside of predefined roads, the position can not be located within built-up areas, but only on a digitized road.
