Map24

Map24 was an online route planner of the German company Mapsolute. Mapsolute was founded in 1996 and won in 2004 with Map24 one of the Webby Awards. 2007 Map24 was bought by Navteq and later merged with Nokia Maps, and since November 2012, under Here.com accessed on the Internet.

Map24 was designed to use through a web browser. You could not only view maps and plan routes. The search for so-called points of interest such places and addresses and the display of these on the card were possible. The card could be moved with the mouse in real time and scaled. There were location-based information such as traffic jams, restaurants, gas stations and radar traps are displayed.

Since mid- October 2006, satellite or aerial photos were available that could be displayed both alone and in conjunction with the map. The directions differed from other such channel or Map & Guide, the fact that the route was explained in full sentences, not been described only very briefly as the competitors. Since mid-October 2007, it was possible to have to show the weather on the interactive map.

Technology

Map24 stood out from its competitors, thereby suggesting that the geographical data was not transferred as raster graphics, but as a vector graphic. This reduced the volumes of data to be transmitted. So cards could be loaded faster than other providers such as Google Maps. Also zooming in the map was characterized liquid.

Unlike other card providers Map24 offered a Java applet to handle and display the data. The Java applet could also be downloaded and then offered advanced features. A flight over the planned route was possible as well as the view of the map from any angle.

Since mid-May 2006, there were an Ajax API can be integrated with the card to other websites and provided with specific content.
