Mapun, Tawi-Tawi

Mapun (Filipino: Bayan ng Mapun / Jama Mapun: Tanah Mapun ) is a Philippine municipality in the province of Tawi - Tawi, Autonomous Region in Muslim Administrative Region of Mindanao. It has 24,168 inhabitants ( census May 1, 2010 ) living in 15 barangays. It is classified as the fourth income class municipality in the Philippines and as urbanized.

Mapun is surrounded by the Sulu Sea, about 295 km north of the provincial capital Panglima Sugala away, and includes the island of Cagayan de Tawi - Tawi and its smaller islands. In addition, include the remote islands Manuc Manucan, Bancauan and Bancoran to the municipality, which are 58-90 km in the north. It is accessible only by boats.

The largest of these are the Jama Mapun (German: People from Mapun ), most of which are Muslims and speak the language Pullun Mapun. Other live in the community indigenous ethnic groups are the Sama Badjao, Pangutaran, Tausug and the Yakan.

Older names for the township was Cagayan de Sulu and Tawi Cagayan de Tawi, since September 5, 1988, she is officially Mapun.
