Marais Viljoen

Marais Viljoen ( born December 2, 1915 in Robertson, Western Cape, † January 4, 2007 in Pretoria) was a South African politician. He was the last non- full-time Head of State of the Republic of South Africa.

Viljoen was dated August 21, 1978 to October 10, 1978 State President of South Africa, followed by Balthazar Johannes Vorster, and again from June 4, 1979 to September 3, 1984. Followed him after a constitutional reform, the previous Prime Minister Pieter Willem Botha.

Family

Viljoen was the youngest of six children. On April 20, 1940 he married Dorothea Maria Brink (17 September 1917 - October 6, 2005 ). He had a daughter and a son.

Party

Viljoen was a member of the National Party, which initiated the apartheid regime. There he was, however, a moderate representatives of the apartheid policy. Before taking office as president, he was president of the Senate ( 1976-1979 ), during his term of compulsory education ( Bantu Education Act ) was introduced for blacks.

Prior to his political career Viljoen worked at the post office and later in the newspaper " The Transvaler ".

Marais Viljoen died on 4 January 2007 at the age of 91 years in Pretoria from heart failure.
