History

The first settlement near the present-day Marathokambos was founded in the second half of the 16th century by people from Chios in the slightly deeper area Loukeika ( Λουκαίικα ). Due to the recently acquired by Kilic Ali Pasha privileges granted by the Sultan of the almost uninhabited island of Samos, people settled until the end of the 17th century from the Peloponnese, probably from Gythio or neighboring Marathonisi of Karpathos, Ikaria and Crete. Probably because of pirate attacks at this time, perhaps because of better supply of water, the place Marathokambos was built higher up. The location between two rivers, surrounded by impenetrable vegetation granted more security. Later, the place extended further to the south and west.

After the connection of Samos Greece Marathokambos was from 1918 to 1997, a rural community ( Kinotita Marathokambou Κοινότητα Μαραθοκάμπου ). First, next to the seaside village of Ormos Marathokambou included only the nearby inland villages Sevasteika and Sakkouleika to the rural community. With its recognition as settlement followed in 1928 Agia Kyriaki, 1961 Paleochori, 1971 and 1991 Kambos Isómata, Limniona and Velanidia. Followed in 1997 by the local government reform in the association with four other rural communities for community Marathokambos. The then created four island communities were merged by the decision taken in 2010 Kallikratis program to the municipality Samos, Marathokambos received the status of a city district ( Δημοτική Κοινότητα ).
