Marathon is a town in Monroe County in the U.S. state of Florida with 8,297 inhabitants ( 2010).

Geography

Marathon comprises the islands of Knight 's Key, Boot Key, Key Vaca, Fat Deer Key, Long Point Key, Crawl Key and Grassy Key, belonging to the Florida Keys island chain. In the south of Key Colony Beach is adjacent to the city, which is about 70 km from Key West and 150 miles from Miami.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 8,297 inhabitants distributed to 6,187 households. The population density was 370.4 inh. / Km ². 90.5 % of the population were white, 4.8% African American, 0.3% Native American and 1.1% Asian Americans. 1.6% were members of other ethnic groups and 1.8% in different ethnic groups. 26.8 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 29.7 % of all households lived in 22.2 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 59.6 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.20 persons and the average family size was 2.68 persons.

18.3% of the population were younger than 20 years, 20.7% were 20-39 years old, 33.3 % were 40-59 years old and 28.0% were at least 60 years old. The median age was 48 years. 51.9 % of the population were male and 48.1% female.

The average annual income was $ 49,633, while 17.0 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 78.11 % of the population spoke Spanish 20.96% and 0.93 % had a different mother tongue.

Economy

Marathon lives mainly from tourism. Most visitors come from the United States and are sport fishermen. Foreign visitors is more often found in Key West.

Traffic

The Overseas Highway (U.S. 1, SR 5) connects the Florida Keys together, and leads from Key West on Homestead to Miami. The highway is the only link to the mainland and also serves as the only escape route in case of a Hurricane. West of Marathon is run, the highway also on the Seven Mile Bridge, which was known among other things, by the film True Lies.

Marathon has its own airport, the Florida Keys Marathon Airport ( ICAO: KMTH ), which is indeed served by several airlines, but mainly serves private aviation.
