Joseph Jean -Pierre Marc Garneau, CC ( born February 23, 1949 in Québec, Québec, Canada) is a former Canadian astronaut and the first Canadian to fly into space. He was from November 2001, President of the Canadian Space Agency (CSA ) before as a candidate of the Liberal Party of Canada had erected for election to the Canadian House of Commons in 2006, but was not elected. In 2008, he ran again, this time in the constituency of Westmount -Ville -Marie ( Montreal), and won the election. In the elections on 2 May 2011, he won the hitherto regarded as safe constituency with a slim margin of 1.6 % versus its challenger of the New Democratic Party.

Garneau made ​​in 1970 with a degree in Technical Physics at the Royal Military College of Canada and received in 1973 a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Imperial College London.

In 1974, he joined as an engineer in the Canadian Navy. Until 1976 he worked aboard the HMCS Algonquin and then as an instructor at the Canadian Forces Fleet School in Halifax.

Astronauts activity

1984 Garneau was selected for the new Canadian astronaut program. In 1992 he went through as a member of the 14th group of the NASA Astronaut Selection training mission specialist. He then worked as a connecting speaker ( Capcom ) for some shuttle missions.

STS -41 -G

STS -77

As a mission specialist Garneau flew as part of the STS -77 mission on the Space Shuttle Endeavour on May 19, 1996 in space. This was the fifth mission of the commercial Spacehab module. Therein, a dozen experiments in the fields of biology, electrical engineering and agriculture were carried out. Furthermore, the platform SPARTAN was exposed, which in turn was called the Inflatable Antenna Experiment ( IAE). STS -97

His last flight into space (STS -97) took him on 1 December 2000 with the space shuttle Endeavour to the International Space Station (ISS). The five-member crew brought the lattice structure P6, equipped with solar panels to generate electricity and radiators for cooling, to the station. After docking, the element was removed from the payload bay of the orbiter and connected with three exits to the space station. After the hatches were opened and the ISS crew was able to greet the crew of the Endeavour. A day later, the shuttle came to return.

Private

Marc Garneau is remarried and has three children. Two of them are from his first marriage, one from his current marriage. As a hobby, he runs sailing, where he has crossed with a 20-meter yawl along with twelve other sailors twice the Atlantic.
