Marc Girardin

Saint -Marc Girardin, François Auguste Marc Girardin actually ( born February 12, 1801 in Paris, † January 1, 1873 in Morsang -sur -Seine ) was a French politician and literary critic.

Life

Saint -Marc Girardin studied law in Paris and taught from 1826 at the Collège Louis le Grand rhetoric. After the first publications in the Journal of the Débats, whose staff he remained for nearly fifty years, he received in 1828 along with Philarète Chasles the price of the Académie française for the literature historical work Tableau de la littérature française au XVIe siècle. He traveled to Italy and Germany, where he was particularly interested in the school system.

After the July Revolution of 1830, he became a professor of history at the Sorbonne, in 1834 he received a chair of French poetry. From 1834 to 1848 he was a deputy, in 1871 a member of the National Assembly. In 1844 he was elected to the Académie française. During the February Revolution of 1848 he was Minister of Education for a short time.
