Marc-René de Voyer de Paulmy d'Argenson (1652–1721)

Marc René de Voyer de Paulmy, marquis d' Argenson (* November 4, 1652 in Venice, † 8 May 1721 in Paris) was a French statesman.

Life and work

He was the son of René Voyer d' Argenson de Paulmy, a French ambassador in Venice, and Marguerite de la Houllier Poyade (* 1635). He had a brother named François Hélie de Voyer d' Argenson de Paulmy. In 1693 he married Marguerite Le Fèvre de Caumartin ( 1672-1719 ), with whom he had three children:

Marc René d' Argenson was Minister of State from 1697 to 1718 and lieutenant general of police ( lieutenant général de police ). In this capacity, he fought against the Jansenists and was selling the Champs in 1709 the nuns of Port -Royal. Of 28 January 1718 to 7 June 1720, he was president of the Finanzkonseils and Keeper of the Seals of France. He advocated the Law's financial operations and resigned after their failure in 1720 by all offices.

He often visited the salon of Madame Claudine Guérin de Tencin, he was also personally very close.
