Marc Shaiman

Marc Shaiman ( born October 22, 1959 in Newark, New Jersey) is an American musical and film composer.

Life and work

His career in film began at Saturday Night Live, where he was employed as a clerk. His first major film as a music composer in 1990 was Misery.

He worked frequently with the actor and director Billy Crystal. He also composed the music for several films by director Rob Reiner.

In 2002, he was responsible for the music of the Broadway musical Hairspray together with the author Thomas Meehan. Five years later he composed the soundtrack to the movie with the same, in which he was involved as an executive producer.

In 2008 he wrote the short Musical Prop 8: The Musical and also directed. In the play, are well-known actors such as Jack Black, John C. Reilly, to see Sarah Chalke and Neil Patrick Harris. Issue is the recognition of same-sex unions in the United States, in particular the referendum Proposition 8 in California.

Shaiman lives with his partner Scott Wittman, who know each other since 1979.

In his previous career, Marc Shaiman seven times was awarded a prize from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Five times he was nominated for an Oscar, including 1994 Sleepless in Seattle. In 1999 he received along with Trey Parker at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards the award for Best Music. A later he was awarded at Online Film Critics Society Awards, again for his score for South Park: The Movie -, uncut bigger, longer. In 2003 he was honored with the Tony Award for Best Original Score.
