Marc Van Montagu

Marc Van Montagu ( born November 10, 1933, Ghent) is a Belgian molecular biologist. Together with Jozef Schell he discovered the mechanism of gene transfer between Agrobacterium tumefaciens and plants. He subsequently developed transformation by Agrobacterium tumefaciens, which is used worldwide in the production of transgenic plants.

In 1990 he was awarded the Prix Charles -Léopold Mayer, 1998 with the Japan Prize in 2013 and the World Food Prize.
