Marcel Fischer

Marcel Fischer ( born August 14, 1978 in Biel / Bienne ) is a successful fencer from Switzerland. He is 190 cm tall and weighs 80 kg. « Märsu " grew up in Brugg in Biel and lives in Basel. He studied medicine at the University of Basel and completed in November 2006. After the dissertation, he has mainly prepared for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, but for which he could not qualify. He was a member of the fencing Gesellschaft Basel. He has learned in the Biel fencing club, whose former fencing master Ryszard Marszalek was the fencing. The Polish school Marszałek was more defensive applied, which is reflected in Fischer's fencing style. His last coach was the Germans Rolf Kalich (former coach ) and Manfred Beckmann ( club coach ). In 2004 he was awarded for his success the Swiss Award in the sports category.

On 13 November 2008 he was in the hall of Bieler fencing clubs a press conference in which he announced to retire from professional racing: "It is a special moment to stop here, where it all began ."

He works as an orthopedic surgeon and lives with his partner and daughter in Scherzingen. In 2011 he was diagnosed with cancer, the malignant tumor was surgically removed.

Achievements

At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens he became Olympic champion in épée fencing. Fischer was in 2003 and 2004 respectively second in the overall World Cup and reached at the Summer Olympics in Sydney in 2000 to fourth place.
