Marcel Mathis

Marcel Mathis ( born December 24, 1991) is an Austrian alpine skier, the most powerful discipline of giant slalom. He is a member since 2012 of the national team of the Austrian Ski Federation.

Biography

Mathis came through his father, the service man in the Ski World Cup, to skiing. He lives in Hohenems, graduated from the Skihauptschule in Schruns and is currently attending the last year ( graduation year) the sports high school in Dornbirn. After he won all the competitions of the Austrian school championships in his age group in 2006, his athletic career was interrupted early by injury. In 2006 he suffered a fracture of the ankle and avulsion of the patellar tendon and 2007 fractures of the tibia and fibula, which is why he had to pause for almost two years in total. From the 2008/2009 season, the then Vorarlberg state team runners could regularly participate in FIS races. After his admission to the junior squad of the Austrian Ski Federation ( Austrians ) followed at the beginning of the season 2009/ 2010, the first launch in the European Cup. Although he initially remained in the European Cup still without points, it was the end of January 2010 from the Austrian Ski Federation, nominated for the first time a World Cup race, the giant slalom in Kranjska Gora. However, in this race, he missed the last to the first passage clearly qualify for the second run. Two days later, he finished eighth in the giant slalom the Junior World Cup in 2010.

At the beginning of the season 2010/2011 Mathis was able to score in the European Cup, a little later followed the first top-10 results for the first time. In the World Cup but he stayed with his four giant slalom start of this winter still no result. The Giant Slalom Junior World Championships 2011 he finished in fifth place. For the Austrian Youth Championships in 2010 and 2011 respectively, he was runner-up in this discipline. In spring 2011, Mathis got after one year in the C- squad on the B-team of the Austrian Ski Federation. He celebrated on 5 December 2011 at the giant slalom in Trysil his first victory in the European Cup and won two weeks later with 27th place in the giant slalom on the Gran Risa in Alta Badia his first World Cup points. After another points win with the 25th place in the giant slalom in Adelboden January 7, 2012, he reached on February 18, 2012 in the giant slalom in Bansko his first podium in the World Cup, as he ran the fastest time in the second run to third place. A month later, he scored the final of the World Cup season 2011/2012 in Schladming again a third place in the giant slalom. Together with Eva -Maria Brem, Michaela Kirchgasser and Philipp Schörghofer he also won the team competition. According to these results Mathis was taken in spring 2012 in the national team of the Austrian Ski Federation.

Mathis was at the home World Cup in 2013 in Schladming on the side of Marcel Hirscher, Nicole Hosp, Kirchgasser, Schörghofer and Carmen Thalmann again part of the Austrian team in the team competition. Mathis did not come here used, was successful with his teammates still world champion.
