Marcel Poot

Marcel Poot ( born May 7, 1901 in Vilvoorde, † June 12, 1988 in Ixelles / Elsene ( Brussels) ) was a Belgian composer.

Life

Marcel Poot, son of Jan Poot the Director of the Vlaamse Schouwburg, the Flemish Theatre in Brussels, studied at the Brussels Conservatory organ with Gerard Nauwelaarts, composition and instrumentation with Arthur De Greef, José Sevenans, Martin Lunssens, Lodewijk Mortelmans, and the Conservatory in Antwerp. At Paul Gilson, he studied privately in composition teaching. He also studied with Paul Dukas at the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris.

After his studies, he first music teacher, music reviewer, and freelance composer. In 1925 he founded with individual former students of the group Les Gilson Synthétistes. Much like the Russian Group of Five and France, the Groupe des Six should also establish in Belgium, such a group and take appropriate influence on the art and music scene. The aim of this group was to join forces to oppose the conservative musical life sound contemporary works. Furthermore, members of this group were: René Bernier, Francis de Bourguignon, Théo de Joncker, Maurice Schoemaker, Jules Strens and Robert Otlet.

He spent 15 years active as a journalist, he was with Paul Gilson co-founder and editor of La Revue Musicale Belge and music editor at the daily newspaper Le Peuple.

From 1939 he was at the conservatory in Brussels as a lecturer and professor of counterpoint and harmony and in 1949 successor of Léon Jongen as director. He held until 1966 this office.

Poot 1960 founded the Union of Belgian composer and took the first chaired.

At the International Queen Elisabeth Competition, he was from 1963 to 1980 chairman of the jury and wrote several commissioned works for the competition. From 1969 to 1976 he was rector of the elite boarding school for young musicians, the Chapelle Musicale Elizabeth. He was a member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Fine Arts of Belgium.

With its 1934 composed Vrolijke Ouverture ( Overture Merry ), which he dedicated to Paul Dukas, who started spontaneously beyond the borders of Belgium also.
