Marcel Rubin

Marcel Rubin ( * July 7, 1905 in Vienna, † May 12, 1995 ) was an Austrian composer, conductor, music critic and music functionary.

Life

Marcel Rubin attended a course in harmony with Richard Stöhr at the Vienna State Academy, where he studied counterpoint with Franz Schmidt and playing the piano with Richard Robert after high school even during school hours. 1925-27 he took private lessons in composition with Darius Milhaud in Paris. He also studied at the University of Vienna Law and graduated with a doctorate from both studies, Dr. phil. 1933 and Dr. iur., 1934.

After Rubin worked at a law firm and led, among other concerts since 1936 with Frederick wild goose the much acclaimed concert series "Music of the Present".

On the day of the "Anschluss " of Austria in 1938 Rubin was forced to emigrate as a Jew. First, he fled to Paris to his sister. In September 1939, he was interned as an "enemy alien ". Later he was deported first to the detention Meslay- du- Maine, and in February 1940 in the " suspects Camp" Damigny at Rennes. Here he composed the music and Jura Soyfer " Dachau Song ," from the currently known version of Herbert Zipper that time he had no knowledge. Even before the fall of France, run by British camp was closed and released the internees. Rubin succeeded in the fall of 1940, to reach his now fled to Marseilles family. There he became a member of the Communist Party and remained there until 1969, when he resigned in protest against the suppression of the Prague Spring again.

1942 Rubin could continue his flight to Mexico. In Mexico City, he was a coach at the Opera, where also fled from Austria Karl Alwin worked as a conductor. As head of the " Choir of the free Germans," he brought his own works to the performance and was a board member of which was founded by emigrants " Heine- Club".

In February 1947, he returned to Austria. He lived as a freelance composer and earned his living as a music critic for the "Austrian Diary" and to 1969 for the " People's Voice ". 1948 to 1965 he also worked as honorary secretary of the Austrian Composers' Association and founded in 1949 with like-minded people who ÖGZM (Austrian Society for Contemporary Music ). From 1957, he held various positions in the AKM, 1975-84 he was its president. The same position which he held 1974-78 at the CISAC from.

On June 2, 1995 Rubin was buried in an honorary grave dedicated to the Vienna Central Cemetery ( Ehrenhain Group 40, No. 170).

Works

His oeuvre includes an opera Clothes make the man, ten symphonies, seven concertos, chamber music and songs. His unconventional style was initially influenced by the Groupe des Six, and in particular by Milhaud and in the rhythm and instrumentation of Stravinsky and Shostakovich.
