Marcel van der Linden

Marius Marcel van der Linden ( born 1952 ) is a Dutch historian. He is Director of Research at the International Institute of Social History and Professor of the History of Social Movements at the University of Amsterdam.

Life

Upon receipt of the baccalaureate in 1971 van der Linden took a degree in astrophysics at the University of Utrecht. In the second semester was a change at the local Social Science. Van der Linden is one of the founders of the Utrecht sociologist Socialist League, which was in contact with the International Communist League, the Dutch section of the Fourth International in parts from 1973. Van der Linden became a writer for the magazine De International as well as the monthly magazine Klassenstrijd.

In 1978 he finished his studies of sociology. From then on he worked as a teacher in the field of economics, but turned after three years of his promotion to.

As of October 1983, he worked for the journal International Review of Social History, the official publication of the International Institute of Social History. In 1987 he was the responsible editor.

1997 Van der Linden was appointed professor of history of social movements at the University of Amsterdam.

Marcel van der Linden researching the history of European and global labor movement and coined since the 1990s, the concept of " Global Labor History" - a paradigm that both the traditional labor movement research as well as the " New Labor History" of the 1960s to a global and want to expand transnational perspective.

From 2005 to 2010 he served as the first president, which was founded in Sydney on 8 July 2005 International Social History Association, based in Amsterdam.

The University of Oslo in 2008 awarded him an honorary doctorate.
