Marcellus is a town in Onondaga County in the U.S. state of New York.

Geography

At a distance of around 18 kilometers, Syracuse is located in the east. The Lakes Group of the Finger Lakes begins five miles to the southwest. The south shore of Lake Ontario, is located at a distance of about 50 kilometers to the north. The east-west road connecting New York State Route 175 and the north -south New York State Route 174 meet in the city center.

History

The city was founded in 1794. The competent person responsible for the naming of the city council, who was an admirer of classical archeology, gave the place on the basis of the Roman general Marcus Claudius Marcellus then the name " Marcellus ". Even more all nearby places in Onondaga County were provided for the same reason with names from Roman history: Cicero, Camillus, Fabius, Lysander, Manlius and Pompey. The residents of Marcellus were initially mainly employed in the timber industry. After commissioning of the Syracuse and Auburn Railroad in 1836, the place became also the trading post. In 1839, a very natural-gas- bearing rock has been discovered under the city at Marcellus drilling. This represents an important geological formation that extends widely among the entire Appalachian was, so called Marcellus. At the beginning of the 21st century was attempted due to rising global energy prices, using the hydraulic fracturing process ( fracking ) to use these natural gas reserves in the region on a large scale. Further studies on the environmental impact and economics of the process are carried out.

Demography

In 2010, a population was determined by 6210 people. The most authoritative immigration groups during the beginnings of the town came to 23.2% in Ireland to 16.8% in Germany to 15.9% in England, 8.4 % in Italy and 6.0% from Poland.
