Marcelo Caetano

Marcelo José das Neves Alves Caetano ( born August 17, 1906 in Lisbon, † October 26, 1980 in Rio de Janeiro) was a Portuguese politician, lawyer and from 1968 until the Carnation Revolution in 1974 Prime Minister of Portugal.

Originally Caetano studied at the Law Faculty of the University of Lisbon, where he also taught from 1962 to 1932. At the same time he had as a confidant of the dictator António de Oliveira Salazar in the government as Minister for the Colonies and Deputy Prime Minister.

After Salazar's disease in 1968, he became his successor. He continued the repressive anti-communist politics and led to war in the colonies further, which cost up to half of the state budget. In contrast to Salazar, he was a proponent of a harder line against the rebels in the colonies. At the same time, he led a tentative reforms.

Caetano was a liberal regime officials and tried in the colonies to enforce a federal system.

In 1974, he was relieved by the Carnation Revolution of his office and went into exile in Madeira, then to Brazil. With the end of his reign ended the Estado Novo in Portugal and the Third Republic was developed.
