Marcha (newspaper)
Marcha was a weekly newspaper of politics and culture from Uruguay, for their decreed by the military closure in 1974 was of great importance in all of Latin America from the 1950s on up.
The first issue of Marcha appeared on June 23, 1939 in Montevideo. Founder and editor in chief until the end was Carlos Quijano ( 1900-1984 ). The motto of the newspaper was " Navigare necesse vivere non necesse ( seafaring does not, not to live ) ." The political orientation was undogmatic left with a special emphasis on the importance of economic and political independence from the United States.
Significant intellectuals from Uruguay, about Juan Carlos Onetti, Mario Benedetti, Eduardo Galeano, Arturo Ardao, Homero Alsina Thevenet, Carlos Martínez Moreno, Manuel Flores Mora, Carlos Real de Azua, Ángel Rama, Alfredo Zitarrosa, María Esther Gilio and Guillermo Chifflet among the editors and journalists; Contributions have also come from other Latin American countries. The rest went often, especially in the 1960s and 1970s in the tens of thousands.
Because of their orientation and their boldness, the magazine of the military involved in the government since 1973, was a thorn in the side. When the Marcha Literature Competition 1974, a dissident narrative of Nelson Marra ( " El guardaespaldas " ) was awarded first prize, they arrested all members of the jury. After her release, Quijano and Hugo Alfaro still managed to publish some numbers, but by the end of the year Marcha was finally banned by the military. Quijano emigrated to Mexico.
Other Editions projects were the 1967 -monthly Cuadernos de Marcha, who devoted themselves each with a theme, and the Biblioteca de Marcha ( 1969-1974 ), published in the mainly anthologies.
In 1983, surviving employees of Marcha together with younger journalists, the magazine Brecha. This follow-up sheet should actually Marcha hot, but this was prevented by Carlos Quijano's family.
The 60th anniversary of the first edition of Marcha was honored with a stamp to 7 pesos in 1999.
