Marciano della Chiana

Marciano della Chiana is a municipality with 3453 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Arezzo, in Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The municipality covers about 24 km ². It is located about 14 km northwest of Arezzo and 50 km southeast of Florence in the Chiana Valley.

The districts include Badicorte, Cesa and San Giovanni dei Mori.

The neighboring municipalities are Arezzo, Castiglion Fiorentino, Foiano della Chiana, Lucignano and Monte San Savino.

History

First inhabitants of the area were the Etruscans, probably belonging to the sphere of influence of the Etruscan ruler from Chiusi. Necklaces, ceramics, and the so-called Torso di Marciano ( a warrior figure, which today is located in Arezzo Archaeological Museum ) have been found here and are attributed to the 6th century BC. The historic town center, however, comes from the Roman period. First mentioned is the place or the district Cesa, in a document of Elemperto, Bishop of Arezzo, issued in Jahre1008. Marciano himself was first mentioned in 1084 in a collection of the monastery Badia di San Quercio delle Rose. In the 12th century it was a free commune and then fell under the rule of Aretines which extensions the fortress ( Rocca ) and the city walls. As Arezzo fell into a crisis that occurred in 1382, the Republic of Siena in its place and strengthened the fortress. But two years later, Marciano was occupied by the Republic of Florence. The Battle of Scannagallo ( Battaglia di Scannagallo, also Battaglia di Marciano called ) took place at the site on August 2, 1554. Here, the Republic of Florence defeated under Gian Giacomo Medici, the Republic of Siena under Piero Strozzi. With the Republic of Florence, the Duchy of Tuscany in the community stepped in and remained there ( with the exception of the Napoleonic occupation of 1799-1814 ) and after the unification of Italy.

Attractions

  • Chiesa dei Santi Stefano e Andrea, a Pieve, which was restored in 1591, but is probably much older.
