Marcin Odlanicki Poczobutt

Marcin Odlanicki Poczobutt ( born October 30, 1728 in Salomenka in Grodno, † February 7, 1810 in Daugavpils ) was a Polish- Lithuanian astronomer, Jesuit and mathematician.

He was professor and rector of Mathematics at Vilnius University where he organized the construction of the local observatory and the equipment purchased. He also made ​​observations of solar and lunar eclipses, comets and asteroids. In addition he created to calculate measurements of the planet Mercury to orbit. Poczobutt determined the geographic coordinates of locations in Lithuania, including Vilnius. He was appointed Astronomer Royal, and became a member of the Royal Society and a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences.

The lunar crater Poczobutt was named after him.
