Marcinkonys

Marcinkonys (Polish Marcinkańce ) is a village and the center of the eponymous administrative district of Rajongemeinde Varėna in the south of Lithuania, 24 km southwest of the urban core Varėna. His settlement area is the largest of a Lithuanian village with 143 ha.

The town lies on the railway line from Vilnius on Varėna to Grodno in Belarus. Road links lead to Druskininkai, Merkinė and Varėna. The town has a railway station, in 1880 a wooden chapel of the Apostles Simon and Jude Tadas, a Museum of Ethnography and a branch of Tadas Ivanauskas - Zoomuseums. Furthermore, here are the administration and information center of the National Park Dzūkija and the management of the nature reserve of Čepkeliai. At the site you can rent bicycles and canoes. In the village there is also a guest house (" Egli "). In the area there are dune continent and the Girinis - way - for - healing with 3.6 km in length.

History

Marcinkonys was first mentioned in documents in 1637. On 1 June 2004, the local coat of arms was legalized by a decree of the President of Lithuania.
