Marco Barbarigo

Marco Barbarigo (c. 1413; † August 14, 1486, buried in Santa Maria della Carita ) was the 73rd Doge of Venice. He reigned from 1485 to 1486.

Family

The Barbarigo were among the richest families of Venice, Marco himself was called the rich. They had extensive real estate in Crete, near Verona and Treviso. Besides the two Doge Agostino Barbarigo Marco and there were a number of procurators and cardinals in the family. The family is extinct in the mid-18th century.

Life

He was the son of the procurator of San Marco Francesco Morosini and Cassandra. He married Lucia Ruzzini whose grandfather was the procurator Federico Contarini. The couple had at least five sons and four daughters.

He was elected in a year in which the plague raging in Venice. In the election, he had only one competitor. He was the first Doge, which was introduced on the Scala dei Giganti in his office.

Tomb

Marco Barbarigo was his brother Agostin Barbarigo in the church of Santa Maria della Carita as buried. The brainchild of Mauro Codussi tomb was almost completely destroyed by Napoleon's troops.
