Marcus Antonius Coccius Sabellicus

Marcantonio Sabellico (Marco Antonio Sabellico; actually Coccio; * around 1436 in the Orsini Castle Vicovaro at Tivoli, † 1506 in Venice ) was an Italian historian and librarian.

Life

Sabellico was born in Vicovaro the son of Giovanni Coccio and became a student of Julius Pomponius Laetus, one of the best connoisseurs of ancient Rome and founder of the Accademia Romana. He was a member of the Roman Academy and had to flee from Rome - because of the trials of the Academy. In 1475 he became a professor in Udine, where he wrote a work on the ancient city of Aquileia. From 1484 he taught in Venice, where he associated with Aldus Manutius. His " Rerum venetarum urbe condita from " ( 1486 ) was a founding history of Venice. In 1504 he completed the " Enneades immersive rapsodiae historiarum ", a world history in 92 volumes, and the first humanist works of this kind, although he used for relatively few sources, he looked at the history of the ancient world with a sense of perspective. Sabellico doubted biblical miracles he looked like classical myths.
