Marcus Belgrave

Marcus Belgrave ( born June 12, 1936 in Chester, Pennsylvania ) is a trumpeter of modern jazz.

Living in Detroit Belgrave played with 18 years at Ray Charles. Later he worked with Max Roach, Charles Mingus, Ella Fitzgerald, Bud Powell, Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr., Dizzy Gillespie and John Sinclair. Since 1988 he has been a permanent member of Wynton Marsalis ' Lincoln Jazz Orchestra. He can be heard on numerous jazz albums, he is also inspiration and patron of musicians of the younger generation such as Kenny Garrett, Regina Carter, James Carter, Geri Allen, Bob Hurst and Carlos McKinney. He was involved in recordings of Charles Mingus, Gunther Schuller, George Gruntz, Geri Allen, Carl Craig, Cecil Payne and David Murray, but also as a studio musician for Motown Records, Blue Note Records or Tribe worked.

Belgrave, who is married to singer Joan Bow Belgrave, teaches at the Stanford Jazz Workshop and is currently (2008) visiting professor at Oberlin Conservatory.

Marcus Belgrave was appointed Kresge Eminent Artist for 2009, an honor that is accompanied by a cash prize of U.S. $ 50,000; the price is both his artistic life's work excellent as well as his activities as a teacher.
