Marcus Brown

Marcus James Brown ( born April 3, 1974 in West Memphis, Arkansas, United States ) is a retired American professional basketball player. He played mainly in Europe on the position of the shooting guard and won the national championships of France, Turkey, Russia, Spain, Lithuania and Israel. Although he could never win the title in the most senior European club competition ULEB Euro League, he is considered one of the most successful North American basketball player in European championship competitions in the first decade of the 21st century.

Career as a player

College

After his school days in West Memphis Brown went to the Murray State University. Here he played a total of four seasons for the college team Murray State Racers. During this time he came up with a points average of 18.9 per game.

NBA

Marcus Brown was drafted in 1996 as 46 of the Portland Trail Blazers and was used in the 1996/97 season a total of 21 times in the NBA. For the next season he signed with the Vancouver Grizzlies but was not used and moved to France. The 1998/99 season could not play Brown because of a knee injury. He got for the 1999/2000 season an NBA contract with the Detroit Pistons and was released after only six missions during the season.

Europe

National Championships

Brown's career in Europe was much more successful. Having been in the season (1997/ 98) with his 20.5 points per game the team of Élan Pau - Orthez Béarnais helped to the championship, he came back to France in 1999 and played for the club Cercle Saint- Pierre of Limoges. With this club he won the 2000 Triple from a national league and cup as well as winning the Korać Cup. He became the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the French League voted ( for the 2nd time after 1998) and the MVP of the playoffs. After CSP Limoges had subsequently relegated for financial reasons, Brown moved to Benetton Treviso in Italy. With Benetton, he also participated in the 2000/01 season at the new established by the competition ULEB Euro League, which then the FIBA Europe League and Suproleague replaced. Here he came up with an average of 19.9 points per game.

For the 2001/ 02 season he joined Efes Pilsen in Istanbul, Turkey. In the following two years he won the Turkish Cup, of which the first 2002 as a Double in conjunction with the victory in the Turkish Cup competition. In both seasons, he was elected MVP of the Turkish league. From the season 2003/ 04 Brown played in Russia for CSKA. Again, he was also twice within two years of Russian masters, of which the second year as double winners in conjunction with the success of the Russian Cup competition. He then moved to Spain for two seasons, where he was in season 2005/ 06 with Unicaja Málaga Spanish masters.

For the 2007 /08 season he played for Zalgiris in Kaunas, Lithuania. In his first season he won the Lithuanian league and cup double and the Baltic Basketball League. He was named MVP of the play-off final of the Lithuanian League. For the 2008/ 09 season he was loaned to Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel, where he was with his team of Israeli masters. After his return to Zalgiris he was as a player / coach one more time Lithuanian champion in the season 2010/11. After he finished his career.

Euro League

Marcus Brown was the first player who had collected 2000/ 01 2500 points in the highest European league from the season. Overall, he came in the Euro League on 2715 points and was at the time of his resignation at the end of the season 2010/11 the most successful points scorer ever in this competition before it was surpassed in the following season by Juan Carlos Navarro. He played with his respective teams three times in the Final Four of the Euro League (2004, 2005 and 2007 ), where in 2007 he was off third as the best placement with CSKA in 2004 and CB Málaga. With CSKA he lost in the 2005 Final Four tournament on home soil both games and was only fourth.
