Marcus Loane

Marcus Lawrence Loane KBE ( born October 14, 1911 in Tasmania, † April 13, 2009 in Sydney) was an Anglican bishop and author.

Loane studied at the University of Sydney and the Moore Theological College. In 1935 he was ordained a priest. After that, he was Vice President from 1939 to 1953 and subsequently from 1954 to 1959 director of the Moore Theological College. During the Second World War Loane served from 1942 to 1944 in Papua New Guinea as a chaplain at the Australian troops associations.

In 1958, Loane received episcopal consecration. He was from 1966 to 1982 Archbishop of Sydney, and from 1978 to 1982 Anglican Primate of Australia. Loane was the first born in Australia, Archbishop of Sydney. In 1976 he was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

He died on 13 April 2009 at the age of 97 after a short illness. Loane was married since 1937 and had four children.
