Marcus Meibomius

Marcus meibomian ( Latinized Marcus Meibomius; * 1630 probably in Tonning, † 1710 in Utrecht) was a Danish philologist, music theorist, mathematician, antiquary and librarian.

Marcus Meibom important work appeared in 1652, when he was only 22 years old. In his essay Antiquae musicae auctores septem he put the ancient Greek music theoretical writings of Aristoxenus, Euclid, Nicomachus of Gerasa, Alypios, Gaudentois, Bakcheios and Areistides Quintilianus together. To this end, he offered a self-made translation of the texts into Latin. In addition, he published there also the Latin text of the seventh book of De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii of Martianus Capella. For some of the writings it was the editio princeps. The work remained until the release of Musici Scriptores Graeci by Karl von Jan in 1895, the authoritative work in the field and stay and now lives in parts of the research useful. His research on ancient music brought meibomian an invitation to the Swedish court of Queen Christina a. There he tried to list the ancient Greek music, however, which he failed, which led to harsh criticism, for example, by Isaac Vossius. 1653 to 1663 he was librarian in Copenhagen.

In addition to the research on music meibomian also dealt with other altphilologischen studies. So he revised Ambrose Civenius ' Latin translation of Diogenes Laertius ' History of Philosophy from the 15th century; this for the first time in 1592 published work was subsequently taken over again and again in later Diogenes spending. Epictetus he translated into Latin and commented on his work as well as the Tabula Cebetis, both of which were posthumously published by Adriaan reland. He devoted himself to the textual criticism of the Hebrew Old Testament, looked specifically at the meter, and conducted research on the mathematical proportions that are close to the musical theory.

Meibomian was considered eccentric and polemical personality, about which circulated many anecdotes.
