Origin and Meaning of the Name

Markus is derived ( " dedicated to the Roman god of war Mars" from * mart - kos, ) from the common Latin name Marcus. Originally he called probably the most people who were born in the month of March; this month is named after the god of war, Mars.

Since the early Christianity, however, is the reference to one of the many saints of this name in the foreground.

Dissemination

In the first half of the 20th century, the name Mark was not used very often as a boy first name in Germany. End of the fifties, his popularity then greatly increased. From the mid-sixties to the late seventies, the name was usually among the top ten of each vintage. Beginning of the nineties was his popularity then decreased significantly.
