Marcus Sandell

Marcus Sandell ( born September 23, 1987 in Espoo ) is a Finnish alpine skier. His strongest discipline of giant slalom. Sandell in 2007, Vice Junior World Champion in Giant Slalom, previously won three European Cup races and reached the World Cup several top - 10 finishes. In September 2009, he suffered serious injuries in a practice crash.

Biography

Sandell denied in December 2002, his first FIS races and had already reached in January 2003, the first podium finish. His first major international event was the Junior World Championship 2004 in Maribor, where he but only 34th in the giant slalom and Super-G was 42 and did not finish in the slalom. A year later, he had already reached number eleven in the Super G and 18th place in the giant slalom at the Junior World Cup 2005 in Bardonecchia. Two weeks later he won his first FIS races. In December 2004 and January 2005, the Finn contested his first three races in the European Cup, but was not there in the points.

From the season 2006/ 07 Sandell belonged to the European Cup squad and started regularly in this series. After the season opener, he won his first points in the slalom race in Salla, he reached in the first giant slalom in Levi already the second place and the next day he celebrated the second giant slalom in Levi with almost half a second ahead of Austrian Michael Zach his first European Cup victory. This was followed by another win in the giant slalom in Serre Chevalier and several top 10 places, which he winning the giant slalom rating secured and eighth in the European Cup overall standings was. That same winter, he played his first World Cup race. The first World Cup points he won on 21 December 2006 with 19th place in the giant slalom in Hinterstoder and end of the season he scored points with 27th place in the giant slalom in Kranjska Gora again. In February 2007 he took part in the World Championships in Åre. There, however, he dropped out in the first giant slalom passage and could not participate in the slalom at the main competition after a failure in the qualification race. In the team competition, he scored fourth place with his teammates. Four weeks later, he won in Altenmarkt the silver medal in the giant slalom at the 2007 World Junior Championships.

After last year's performance Sandell rose in 2007 in the Finnish World Cup squad on. In the World Cup season 2007/ 08 he first reached several top -20 finishes, but had, especially in the slalom, also suffered some losses. On 23 February 2008, he took ninth in the giant slalom at Whistler for the first time in the top ten and the season finale in Bormio he reached the eighth place in the Giant Slalom and for the first time in the top 10. In the giant slalom World Cup, he finished 16th place as the second best Finn. In the 2007/ 08 season in the European Cup he achieved a victory in the giant slalom in St. Vigil, and a third place in the giant slalom in Hinterstoder. In the World Cup season 2008/ 09 was again the giant slalom his strongest discipline. Sandell reached a tenth place in Sestriere and another three top -20 results, but fell so in giant slalom World Cup at No. 24 back. In the slalom, he brought like last year no result to the finish, but in the super-combined for the first time he could score with the 27th rank in Sestriere. At the 2009 World Championships in Val d'Isere, the Finn took 16th place in the giant slalom, but fell in the slalom out in the second round. In the European Cup he played in only four races this winter. His best result was a second place in the giant slalom in St. Vigil.

On 28 September 2009 Sandell crashed during training at the Pitztal Glacier in Tyrol. He came off the track from, crashed into a boulder field and retired while severe injury to the kidney and spleen and fractures of the nasal bone and wrist to. In the hospital Innsbruck him after a kidney had to be removed. When the giant slalom in Kranjska Gora on 29 January 2010, he made his comeback as a precursor. The first competition after his serious injury was the giant slalom of the 2010 Winter Olympics on February 23, where he was eliminated in the second round. This season, this was his only race start.

After the season 2010/11 was initially characterized by modest benefits, Sandell has established on February 6, 2011 as the seventh of the giant slalom in Hinterstoder again in the world rankings. Twelve days later, he scored the tenth place in the Giant Slalom World Championships 2011 in Garmisch -Partenkirchen. In the World Cup slalom he left. In the season 2011/12 he went twice in the top ten in the 2012/13 season so far three times. His best result is a fourth place finish, achieved on 24 February 2013 giant slalom in Garmisch -Partenkirchen.
