Marcus Stephen

Marcus Ajamada Stephen (born 1 October 1969 in Anetan ) is a former weightlifter nauruischer and current Member of the Nauruan Parliament. Of 19 December 2007 to 10 November 2011, he was acting president and head of state of the Republic of Nauru.

Life

Sporting career

He first played Australian football for the local team Aces, but opted for weightlifting. In 1989, one the Nauru Weightlifting Federation ( NWF ) to enable switching to that time the only professional weightlifter Stephen in international competitions.

In 1992 he took first at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona in part. As there was no time Olympic Committee in Nauru, he applied successfully for the citizenship of Samoa and was allowed to start for Samoa. 1993 then saw the establishment of the committee and thus Stephen was able to compete in Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 for Nauru.

At the Commonwealth Games, however, he reached his greatest success: In 1990, he surprisingly won the gold medal in the snatch in the category up to 60 kg. 1994 in the category up to 59 kg and 1998 in the category to 62 kg, it took three times gold. In his last appearance in 2002 in Manchester, he won three more times the silver medal in the category up to 62 kg.

He celebrated the greatest success at the 1999 World Championships in Athens, when he became vice world champion in pushing in the category up to 62 kg.

Political career

Since 1997 he is a financial manager at Nauruan Olympic Committee. On 3 May 2003 Stephen was elected to the Nauruan Parliament for the constituency Anetan in the parliamentary elections with 215 votes. During the last presidency of René Harris August 8, 2003 to June 22, 2004 Stephen was educational and Finance Minister of Nauru, a position he had to lie down again, as the new President Ludwig Scotty was. In October 2004, he managed the re-election to parliament.

After the Nauru International Whaling Commission ( IWC) has joined on 15 June 2005, Stephen was appointed Nauruan emissaries of IWC. He represented Nauru at the IWC Conference in June 2005 in Ulsan, South Korea. In August 2007, he was re- elected to Parliament, and was nominated by the opposition shrunk as a presidential candidate, but was defeated Scotty in the crucial vote in parliament significantly with 3 votes to 14. On 19 December 2007 Stephen surprisingly won a confidence vote by 10 votes to 7 against Scotty and was sworn in as the new president and head of state. His cabinet consists of foreign and Transport Minister Kieren Keke, Finance and Economy Minister Frederick Pitcher, Trade and Industry Minister Fabian Ribauw, Justice and Education Minister Roland Kun and Health and Sports Minister Matthew Batsiua. Stephen himself assumes in addition the Ministry of the Interior, public services and phosphate profit management. On November 10, 2011 Stephen resigned, his successor Frederick Pitcher was selected.
