Marcus Valerius Messalla Rufus

Marcus Valerius Messala Rufus (c. 103 BC; † approx 27/26 BC) was a Roman politician of the late Republic.

He was the nephew of the orator Quintus Hortensius Hortalus and probably cousin of Marcus Valerius Messala Niger. His sister Valeria was the fifth wife of the dictator Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix. His ( alleged ) son was Potitus Valerius Messala, Suffektkonsul 29 BC

Messala was at a young age ( 82/81 BC) Augur, a position he held until his death 55 years. 62 or 61 BC he was praetor in 53 BC, consul Gnaeus Domitius together with Calvinus; due to delays in the elections could start only in July, the two office. 51 BC Messalla was charged twice for illegal acts related to elections; the first time he was acquitted due to the eloquence of his uncle Hortensius, despite his obvious guilt, sentenced the second time.

In the civil war Messalla stood as a legacy, inter alia in the fighting in Africa and Spain, on the part of Caesar, after his assassination he retired from political life and was only literary activities; his works de auspiciis and de familiis are lost.
