Marengo (horse)

Marengo was the war horse riding and Napoleon Bonaparte. Marengo was named after the Battle of Marengo, where Napoleon rode him. Marengo was a small Arab stallion whose Height was only 1.45 m. He probably came from the stud farm of El Naseri and one year after the Battle of Aboukir imported as a six year old from Arabia.

Marengo is described as a fast, skillful, courageous and recoil resistant. He was wounded eight times in battle. He wore Napoleon in the battles of Austerlitz, Jena, Wagram and Waterloo and survived the Russian campaign. According to reports, Marengo was able to gallop the distance of 129 km from Valladolid to Burgos in five hours.

At Waterloo Marengo was captured and taken by Lord Petre to England. General Angerstein bought Marengo. Attempts to use Marengo at the farm in New Barnes in Ely as a sire was granted little success. Marengo died at the age of 38 years. His skeleton was erected at the Imperial War Museum in London. General Angerstein was a hoof transform into a snuffbox.
