Margaret Ekpo

Chief Margaret Ekpo Afiong (* July 27, 1914, † 21 September 2006) was a Nigerian politician and women's rights activist.

She founded in the city of Aba Aba the Market Women's Association to strengthen the political influence of women and to improve their economic position. After 1948, the nationally known women's activist Funmilayo Ransome Kuti - Aba visited, Margaret Ekpo joined with their organization Kuti's Nigerian Women 's Union ( NWU ). Ekpo was first chairman of the Aba branch of the Association, and later rose to become Secretary General of the NWU. As she sat in the Women's Representative Eastern House of Chiefs, Nigeria (1954-1958) and participated in the Constituent Conference for an independent Nigeria. Besides her work for the women's movement, she was a member of the NCNC ( National Council for Nigeria and the Cameroons ) the party of the later first Nigerian President Nnamdi Azikiwe, where he led the women's wing. From 1960, she had a seat in Parliament. During the Nigerian civil war (1967-1970) Margaret Ekpo remained on the Biafran side and taught at Umudike College in Umuahia. After the war, she was active on the world in many women's organizations and conferences.
