Margareta Brahe

Margareta Brahe ( born June 20, 1603 Castle Rydboholm, community Österåker, † May 15 1669 in Weferlingen, Saxony- Anhalt) was a Swedish countess and heiress, and by her last marriage Princess of Hesse -Homburg.

Life

Margaret was a daughter of Count Brahe Abraham, a son of Per Brahe the Elder, from his marriage to Elsa Gyllenstierna af Lundholm. She was a sister of the kingdom bailiff Per Brahe the Younger. Margareta married his first wife in 1633 Imperial Council Count Bengt Oxenstierna Bengtson († 1643) and his second wife in 1648 Johan Axelsson Oxenstierna Count († 1657), the eldest son of the Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna. She was maid of honor of the queens Maria Eleonora and Christina of Sweden. As a member of one of the most prominent Swedish families they had great political influence at the Swedish court.

From the estate of her second husband acquired Margareta an important library held by the Sture family and the Dukes of Pomerania -Stettin, with Margaret's brother laid the foundation of the library in Visingsö. Today, the books are available in the University of Växjö.

On May 12, 1661 very rich heiress married in Stockholm the 30 year younger Prince Friedrich von Homburg. Even Ludwig Heinrich Graf von Nassau- Dillenburg had sought her hand, which led to disputes. The funds acquired through the marriage of Frederick bought the estate Weferlingen and after the death of his wife several lands in today's German states of Saxony- Anhalt and Brandenburg, including office and city Neustadt ( Dosse).
