Margate is an English town on the northern coastline of the Isle of Thanet, Broadstairs and between Herne Bay in Kent. The city has 58 465 inhabitants ( 2001). The Cliffs of their coastline consist of Cretaceous and are known for their fossil finds.

Before Margate Thanet coast, the wind was in 2009 erected farm.

History

Around the year 1254 the city was founded under the name Meregate and known to 1293 as Margate. The name changed several times until the present time. He is said to be derived from a gap in the cliffs behind them ponds.

In the 15th century Margate belonged to the alliance of the Cinque Ports as an outpost of Dover. From the middle of the 18th century, the city developed into one of the leading English seaside resorts. Just like its neighbor Ramsgate it was traditional destination for Londoners, who were attracted by the sandy beaches. The Victorian pier in 1978 was destroyed by a storm.

Just like the other resorts Southend and Brighton Margate was notorious for clashes between Mods and Rockers in the 1960s and between mods and skinheads in the 1980s.

Tourism

As the entire region lives mainly from tourism Margate, favored by the proximity to London. Policy

Since 1983 put the Conservatives in the election district of North Thanet and Herne Bay MPs. In the last election in 2010 they reached 52.7 %. The Labour Party scored 21.5%, Liberals 19.4% and the Independents 6.5%.

Since 1857 Margate existed as a separate district ( municipal borough ). In 1974, the city became part of the district of Thanet, Kent. The city consists of the seven electoral districts Margate Central, Cliftonville West, Cliftonville East, West Brook, Garlinge, Dane Valley and Salmestone. There, 17 of the 56 seats of the District Council of Thanet be selected. In the 2007 election the Conservatives won nine seats, the Liberals seven seats and one seat went to the independents.

The employees of the city are divided into the following employment sectors: 17% in retail, 16% in health and social services, 13% in the craft, 9% in the construction sector, 5% public administration, 6% hotels and restaurants, 2 % financial services, 1% agriculture and 6% other public services.

Unemployment in the city is higher than the national average, which is particularly justified in declining tourism in recent years.
