Margherita Gonzaga, Duchess of Lorraine

Margarita Gonzaga ( born October 2, 1591 in Mantua, † February 7, 1632 in Nancy) was an Italian nobleman of the house of Gonzaga.

Margarita was the fourth child and eldest daughter of Vincenzo I Gonzaga (1562-1612), Duke of Mantua and Montferrat, and his second wife Eleonora de ' Medici (1566-1611), in turn daughter of Francesco de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany. Mother's margarita was a niece of Marie de Medici, the second wife of the French King Henry IV

On April 26, 1606 Margarita was in Nancy with Henry II, Duke of Lorraine and Bar, married, his first wife Catherine of Bourbon had died in 1604. The couple had two daughters:

  • Nicole of Lorraine (Nicole de Lorraine, 1608-1657 ) who in 1621 married her cousin Charles of Vaudémont and Duchess of Lorraine was.
  • Claudia of Lorraine ( Claude de Lorraine, 1612-1648 ), who married in 1634 Duke Nicholas II Francis of Lorraine, the younger brother of Charles IV.

Margaritas dowry was the Margraviate Nomeny and the country of Létricourt. After the death of her husband in 1624, she went to the French court, where she represented the interests of their daughter Nicole, as successor Henry II to govern the Duchy of Lorraine.

Back in Lorraine, Margarita lived for several years in Nomeny. She died in 1632 in Nancy.
