Marghita

Marghita ( Margaret German, Hungarian Margitta ) is a city in Bihor County in Romania.

Location

Marghita located in Crisana in the northern foothills of the Apuseni Mountains. The county town of Oradea is located about 45 km southwest.

History

The oldest archaeological finds of the region from the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages.

In 1216 the town was first mentioned. Already in the late Middle Ages it was a center of trade and crafts. Before 1500, he was granted market rights. From 1526 to the early 18th century Marghita belonged to the Ottoman Empire, then to Austria - Hungary. 1710 and 1739 the place of plague was concerned, 1823 was destroyed by fire in half. 1852 acquired the monastery of Melk, Lower Austria real estate in the town, which has a favorable impact on economic development.

After the First World War came Marghita, at that time still had a significant Hungarian population majority, to Romania. As a result of the Second Vienna Award of the City from 1940 to 1944 came back temporarily to Hungary. 1944, the most Jewish residents were deported to extermination camps.

A significant industrial development began after the Second World War. 1967 Marghita became a town in 2003 for " Municipiul " ( Municipality, ie a more important city) explained.

Population

1880 lived on the territory of today's 4,685 people, of which about three-quarters of Hungary. In 1920, designated from the then 7,578 inhabitants 4,376 as Hungary, 1670, as Jews and 1,473 as Romanians. In 1956, the number of Jews had fallen to 218. 1992, more Romanians were counted as Hungary for the first time. As of the 2002 census, 17,291 residents were registered in the city, including 9,167 Romanians, 7,468 Hungarians, 485 Roma, 82 Slovaks, 33 German and two Jews.

Traffic

Marghita is located on a side track from Sacueni after Sarmasag. Through the city along the national road 19B of Nusfalau leads to Sacueni. From 2013 onwards, the A3 motorway will run past Marghita.
