Maria Beatrice of Savoy

Maria Beatrix Victoria Josephine of Savoy (December 6, 1792 in Turin, † September 15, 1840 in Castello del Catajo ) was by marriage to Francis of Austria -Este from 1814 until her death Duchess of Modena.

Life

Maria Beatrix was the eldest daughter of Victor Emmanuel I., since 1802 King of Sardinia - Piedmont, and his wife Maria Theresa of Austria -Este in Turin to the world. In December 1798, she left with her parents and uncles because of the Napoleonic Wars Turin and fled with them first to Parma, then to Florence. The family eventually settled in Sardinia, the last alleged by the Kingdom of Sardinia territory, down. This is how Mary Beatrix held in the next 13 years mostly in Cagliari.

On June 20, 1812 Maria Beatrix married by a license issued by Pope Pius VII dispensation in Cagliari her maternal uncle, Archduke Franz of Austria -Este. After the fall of Napoleon in 1814, the couple was able to return. Maria Beatrix's husband was on July 14, 1814 as Franz IV Duke of Modena and Reggio. Due to the invasion of Joachim Murat during Napoleon's rule of the Hundred Days, the pair until May 15, 1815 Modena had to leave again. Maria Beatrix and her husband had four children together:

  • Maria Beatrix (1824-1906), married to John, Infant of Spain

Maria Beatrix was a descendant of the Stuarts. It was therefore considered by the Jacobites after the death of her father (1824 ), as holder of the British throne, and referred to by them as Mary II, Queen of England, Scotland, Ireland and France. However, it has never claimed this title publicly.

Beginning in February 1831 had to Maria Beatrix caused by the outbreak of a revolution with her family to flee again briefly from Modena, but has already returned with military support from Austria about a month later. On September 15, 1840 she died at the age of 47 of a heart attack and was buried in the Chiesa di San Vincenzo in Modena. Your position as heir to the House of Stuart went over to her son Francis.
