Maria Caterina Brignole

Marie Catherine Brignole ( born October 7, 1737 Genoa; † March 18, 1813 in Wimbledon ) was reigning Princess of Monaco and Princess Condé.

Life

The daughter of the Doge Giovanni Maria Brignole (1703-1769) and Anna Balbi (* 1720) from one of the oldest Genoese noble families married on July 5, 1757 at the age of 20 years in Monaco Prince Honoré III. of Monaco. She brought a considerable dowry in the Princely House. The couple had two children:

  • Prince Honoré IV of Monaco (1758-1819)
  • Prince Joseph of Monaco (1767-1816)

In 1770, the couple divorced, and Catherine moved to France. During the French Revolution she escaped to England and married there, already 61 years old, on October 24, 1798 Louis (v. ) de Bourbon- Condé ( 1736-1818 ), the widowed Prince of Condé, a vehement opponent of the Revolution and Napoleon.

Catherine died in 1813 in exile in England, and was buried in the Chapel of St Louis at Wimbledon. A year after her death, her husband was able to return to France.
